In the last three days I have seen several sad stories out of Afganistan. This now seems to be the forgotten front in the war on terra, and more sadly it seems that any chance of real change for the better there is eroding rapidly. Here below are links to Several important articles regarding the situation in Afganistan.
A Precarious Shelter in Afghanistan tells of the troubles that womens shelters are having in Afghanistan. It tells the sad tale of womens plight under the tribalistic and barbaric culture of some of the people of Afghanistan. What? am I being unfair here ?? Marrying girls off at 11?? Read the article and you will see what I mean.
In the second one Accept defeat by the Taliban makes the tragic point that senior Pakistani officials are asking NATO leaders to accept defeat in Afghanistan by the Taliban. This is almost unbelievable to me, that WE are now being told to accept defeat by this irregular force. Also this is not being widely reported in the American press, which, once again lead us to the conclusion that American press outlets are not doing their job. And Pakistan?? our 'ally' ??? Personally I think we need to rethink a few things here.
This is only two of the many reports now coming out of Afghanistan that indicate that the situation there is deteriorating as rapidly as in Iraq. When, I would like to know, is the American public going to recognize this...
the latest report from CNN is here
At this point it would appear that we have not only failed in Iraq but also in Afghanistan. the consequence of this may, in the end, be even worse than that of failure in Iraq, as Afghanistan was the stronghold of OBL and his followers. Another thing that strikes me is that it took about half the time that it took the Russians to fail here; what does that say about our abilites to operate in such a place.
This whole thing gets worse every day. Comments? thoughts?
