Democrats should propose legislation to limit the number of tours of duty soldiers can be required to serve in Iraq. I think it could bring about the end of the war.
Today in the WaPo online chat someone made a suggestion that I thought was quite good. They suggested that although Democrats could not cut funding for the Iraq war they could propose legislation to limit the number of tours of duty that armed service members were required to perform.
It strikes me as a great way to force the issue. There isn't a person here who believes that Bush will willingly draw down troops while he remains in office. We also know that the Democrats would be crucified if they tried to end funding.
If they were to propose this, I think it would be supported by the military. They certainly know that this war is breaking their forces. It would likely be supported by the military families who are forced to shoulder all of the burden. It could be framed as an issue of fairness, which plays to American's view of ourselves. "It's just not fair that our soldiers are forced into tour after tour. Are they the ONLY ones who have to sacrifice?"
It would also bring to front and center the million-dollar question: "Where are the troops going to come from?" that so many of us want to ask those who say we just need to send in more troops.
If it comes to a draft the American people will revolt against this war in no uncertain terms.
