I finally had a chance to read the SOTU speech more closely. Actually, I
lie: I read some analyses of it. Fortunately, the president's brilliance
shines through even without his marvelous rearrangements of grammar.
I am delighted that the President is continuing his support of alternative
technologies. In today's hydrogen-fuelled age, it is hardly imaginable
that a scant few years ago, the hydrogen-powered car was but a President's
dream. The burst of innovation in this technology that we are all now so
familiar with -- the headlines, the sprouting up of hydrogen plants, the
Nobel prize for for the hydrogen-powered combustion engine -- it is easy
to take all this for granted, and many young children today may not
realise that this, just like our Mars biodome, is entirely down to one
man's vision.
It was also heart-warming to read that the president has promised 100,000
new science teaching personnel for schools. The great news is that, since
our president has also proclaimed that Intelligent Design be taught
alongside neo-Darwinism, at least 50,000 of these science teachers will
receive their training in Mega-churches. The boost this will provide to
the economy of religious middle America will be a welcome local antidote
to the freezing of the research budget for scientific research at NIH, a
prudent fiscal move following the reckless doubling of that budget under
the Clinton administration (and with not a dollar targeted to faith-based
groups! What an immoral, adulterous president that was.)
On a related note, I am glad that the president has vowed to keep our
economy competitive with that of China and India. Not to anticipate the
machinations of such a policy genius, but I have an inkling of how he
plans to do this: by persuading them to form a coalition and launch an
expensive war of choice against Iran! The resulting boost to the economies
of these countries will make them almost as competitive as the war in Iraq
has made ours, and will bolster the rich and vibrant mutual trade in arms
(and fat security consultants) that our nations so enjoy.
All in all, a miraculous speech, full of promises I have no doubts in his
ability to keep. After all, he's not a lame duck with no ideas and a
sinking popularity rating. Quite the reverse.
