Well, the
new AP-Ipsos polling results are in, and despite the State of the Union speech, as well as an
aggressive campaign to defend the unconstitutional wiretapping, the general public is still just as unhappy with Dear Leader as they were last month.
So much for the SOTU and PR bounce. No wonder why we haven't seen any new polling numbers in weeks.
Interestingly, you can't find the new poll results anywhere yet, other than Salon.com.
Important pieces below:
The poll was conducted Feb. 6-8, and the results are nice and juicy (January results are in parenthesis):
1. Generally speaking, would you say things in this country are heading in the right direction, or are they off on the wrong track?
--Right direction, 35 percent (32)
--Wrong track, 61 percent (65)
--Not sure, 4 percent (3)
2. Overall, do you approve, disapprove or have mixed feelings about the way George W. Bush is handling his job as president?
--Approve, 40 percent (40)
--Disapprove, 57 percent (59)
--Mixed feelings, 2 percent (1)
3. And when it comes to handling the economy, do you approve or disapprove or have mixed feelings about the way George W. Bush is handling that issue?
--Approve, 40 percent (39)
--Disapprove, 58 percent (59)
--Mixed feelings, 2 percent (2)
4. And when it comes to domestic issues like health care, education and the environment, do you approve or disapprove or have mixed feelings about the way George W. Bush is handling that issue?
--Approve, 39 percent (35)
--Disapprove, 58 percent (62)
--Mixed feelings, 2 (2)
5. When it comes to handling foreign policy issues and the war on terrorism, do you approve or disapprove or have mixed feelings about the way George W. Bush is handling that issue?
--Approve, 47 percent (44)
--Disapprove, 50 percent (54)
--Mixed feelings, 2 percent (1)
6. When it comes to handling the situation in Iraq, do you approve or disapprove or have mixed feelings about the way George W. Bush is handling that issue?
--Approve, 38 percent (39)
--Disapprove, 60 percent (58)
--Mixed feelings, 1 percent (1)
--Not sure, 1 percent (X)
7. And if the election for Congress were held today, would you want to see the Republicans or Democrats win control of Congress?
--Republicans, 37 percent (36)
--Democrats, 47 percent (49)
--Neither (VOLUNTEERED), 13 percent (12)
--Not sure, 3 percent (3)
Any way you look at the numbers, they are just abysmal. While there are slight slight changes in the numbers, we still see the following:
- Over 60% of the people think the country is headed in the wrong direction;
- His approval rating can't climb above the baseline of 40%, despite aggressive PR campaigns to mislead the public on nearly everything;
- His approval numbers on Iraq actually DROPPED to 38% approval. So much for "turning the corner";
- Nearly 20% MORE people think he is crapping out on the economy, the environment, healthcare and education (what else is there???) than those who think he is doing a good job;
- On his STRONGEST point (Warren Terrah), a full 50% think he isn't doing the job.
If this ain't the cannon fodder that the Dems can latch onto, especially with
this,
this,
this,
this,
and this (hat tip to thereisnospoon), then I don't know what is....
Good to see that post SOTU dead cat bounce though.
