For the uninitiated, in the early seventies, Ken Russell made one of the most outrageous films of all times - The Devils, based on Aldous Huxley's book, The Devils of Loudon with a dash of John Whiting thrown in for good measure. The film is about Cardinal Richelieu's 1634 assault on a walled town in France.
Anyway, as I read the story about Cheney's easy hunting, all I could remember was the scene where Louis XIII dresses a bunch of loathed Protestants up as black birds, and sends them running around his estate for his shooting pleasure. We see the men in costume fleeing over a bridge as Louis gleefully fires away.
What a disgraceful country we are. I never thought we'd reach a point where any aspect of American life would seriously make me think of that film.
