Our Esteemed Fuhrer has now hit 33% in the polls. The congress is doing pretty nearly as badly. Yet it doesn't even seem to faze them.
I've been trying to figure this out for a while now. Usually when poll numbers get bad a president is scrambling trying to improve them - occasionally doing stupid things, but obviously aware of the fact that he's in the tank. Bush doesn't seem to have that problem. It seems that no matter how low he goes, he just plows ahead anyways, doing exactly what he wants, with no regard for how people think of him.
I can only think of two explanations. Both are really disturbing.
Explanation number one is that he just doesn't care. He is so convinced that he is right and that everyone who doesn't agree with him is not, that he'll do whatever he wants even if only a few thousand people agree with his policies. In this scenario, the American people don't matter to him one whit and neither do their opinions, and he'll do whatever the hell he wants, and damned with the consequences.
Explanation number two is that he is so incompetent or doped up that he isn't even aware of it - that he could tank into the low teens and he would be completely oblivious to it.
Both of these are scary - but then you have the fact that it seems as if the entire congress and most of the media is kowtowing to him. The Republicans are kissing his pasty white butt, and the Democrats, while not doing any kissing themselves, are handing out moist towelettes and lubricant. Yes, the Democrats are part of the problem, because watching their behavior lately, they sure as hell aren't being part of the solution. With a couple of exceptions, of course. What the Democrats need to do is start yelling, loudly and incessantly. Instead, they insist on treating their republican counterparts as if they are gentlemen. They aren't, they are liars and crooks, and the only way to counter that is to just fucking give up on that and start treating them like the enemy they are. Make the noise level so deafening that they can't get a word in edgewise without someone screaming at them.
The government is going to hell in a handbasket. There's no doubt about that. But I keep getting this nagging feeling that as the populace grows less and less satisfied, that the things they are willing to do to end this will become more and more extreme. "May you live in interesting times", says the ancient Chinese curse. These times certainly are interesting. I just hope that they don't "interesting" us right into a modern day Nazi Germany.
This is just a rant diary. Flame if you want.
