Have to start this diary out by acknowledging that, like Carnacki and others who've expressed ennui, I feel as weary as everyone else. But taking heed of Armando's latest diary, I do not want to succumb to defeatism.
My Webform letter to Senator Reid will probably be read by a staffer and might very well be flushed with the Delete key; but eh, longshot or not, I'm still a believer in the notion that "every little bit counts."
Copy of my letter at the flip.
Dear Senator Reid,
I am not a Nevada resident, but felt compelled to write to you as you are the Democratic Leader in the Senate and are able to rally the Democratic Senators to take a united stand in government. I really have a lot of respect for you, so please don't take any of what I say below as a slight against your character or abilities.
Like many others, however, I am getting reasonably frustrated with the inertia that has consistently gripped the Democratic elected officials in Washington, D.C. The Republican majority is mired in a culture of not only corruption (that is frankly putting it quite lightly), but greed, power-hunger, and deceit--all of which are patently evil.
The Republican Party preaches "moral values" but clearly abides by none. Much loss of life, financial and other types of suffering, and deterioration of our national culture, moral compass, and reputation has taken place at the hands of the Bush Administration. In the name of simply getting more money and power for himself and his wealthy friends, President Bush has committed many crimes while he is in office, the least of which is the illegal wiretapping against Americans, for which Senator Russ Feingold has proposed to censure him.
It is shameful that only two other Senators--Harkin and Boxer--have stepped forward to support their fellow Democratic Senator in what many of us believe is a reasoned, justifiable approach to holding our President accountable for what he has done. The Democratic mantra of late has been "Americans deserve better." I would have to agree--we deserve better not only from our President and his administration, but also our elected Democratic officials whom we entrust to enforce the necessary checks and balances in our democracy that is supposed to be so great.
With all due respect, Senator Reid, you must do what you can to rally the Democratic Senators (and even moderate Republican Senators such as Snowe and Chafee) to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Senator Feingold. You have legions of us Americans behind you, supporting you and wanting to preserve our great country. Please support us, and please do not let us or your fellow Senator down.
Thank you for hearing my concerns,
