For those of you following English-language media, you may have been confused about "immigration" issues you've been hearing about, and about the "largest protest ever" in
Phoenix (NY Times), but there has been remarkably little follow up.
What we're protesting is HR4437, a draconian bill promoted by James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), which passed by voice vote in the house on December 16, 2005.
Learn more about the bill at the link above. Summary and protest information on the flip.
Here are its main offending provisions (and it's chock full of terrible stuff):
-Making mere presence here a felony for the first time (it was a civil violation before)
-Making it a crime to aid an illegal immigrant (even giving a homeless person shelter and would also criminalize much church activity)
-Authorizing indefinite and automatic detention
-Allowing local police to enforce these laws (which they current don't, which is why sometimes immigrants feel they can go to the police)
-Builds a gulag style double-wall tank track fence across one third of the Mexico/US Border, with massive humanitarian and environmental consequences
Sound like this can't be true? Well, wake up. This sucker passed the House of "Representatives" by 239-182. What can you do?
It's still not too late in Southern California. Today, Saturday, we will be presente in what is predicted to be the largest March in S. Cal. (recent) history. Join everyone at 10:00 PST in Downtown Los Angeles at Olympic and Broadway. Link is here.
There are also numerous other protests and hunger strikes going on throughout the nation. Although I know Kossacks as a whole don't favor them (or at least Kos)...get out this morning and CAUSE A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE! (And bring your balaclava, cause it could get ugly).
