There have been a great many diaries on the topic of illegal immigration and the many ways to solve it as a problem in this country. From Sensenbrenners crazy plot set to be debated in the Senate next week to all the different things being discussed here on this very blog.
What I'm curious to think about though is where are people with becoming immigrants to a new country themselves. What do you all think I about Emmigration to a new land, that possibly more closely represents your values. I left last September to come to Vancouver, BC here in Canada. It for me is quite possibly one of the best choices I have ever made. I went home over Christmas 2005 to see if I had actually made the right choice coming here from living in the Southern US. I discovered that I had because I couldn't live in the environment that exists down there anymore.
So while I'm currently a legal temporary resident of Canada I know that I would love to stay here forever and build something new for myself here. A country where I at least have the ability to love who I want and not have to be constantly looking over my shoulder at the Republicans to see what their up to next.
I was reading a diary just before I went to post this one and there was a line in there that said something to the effect of "immigrants work twice as hard than the lazy white guys". Even though I am the lazy white guy being an immigrant to this new country I can't work because I don't have a Permit but I can still apply and put my name into the hat with the skills I do have.
I'm not saying my situation is identical to theirs far from it as I know they are very different. But in both cases I see that people in new places always have to work harder for things natives take for granted.
I just figured with all these thoughts about people coming to the US. I wanted to ask about people leaving it.
