Note: Added "(maybe)" to the title as suggested below for clarity and to avoid prejudging the value of the DNA tests. Many have weighed in with valuable comments. I thank you all.
On the news in Durham: DNA test results from the SBI labs was returned to the courthouse minutes ago. According to the Defense attorneys, there was no evidence of rape present on the victim. Period. In fact, there was no evidence of sexual activity of any sort on the part of the victim, for several days prior.
When asked if condoms might have been used, the defense said that there was no trace of latex or lubricant present in the sample taken from the person making the gang-rape claim.
The DA has gone on record as saying that the case does not hinge on the DNA results alone and has not decided if the case against the team will be dropped. As of this writing, Nifong (the DA) has released no statement.
(Update: The DA has said that he is reviewing the evidence and that the statements released by the defense may not be the last word. He said that the case may still proceed based on other evidence.)
DNA from two of the team members was found on the floor and on towels in the bathroom where the rape was to have occurred, but that was the bathroom used by the players on a daily basis. The defense said that DNA traces will be present in any bathroom, and that is not unusual.
Earlier today, the defense reported that photos taken prior to the alleged incident showed bruising on the exotic dancer/student's body when she arrived at the off-campus house rented by the team.
What are we to make of this? Are they guilty of of the most heinous of crimes or do we owe them an apology?
Note: I have no dog in this fight. Just want to know what really happened.
