I've always known it in my gut that the main tenants of the Bible were very progressive. It shouldn't suprise any of you that despite the fact that 99% of the neocons claim to be Christian, their actions are actually very contrary to the Bible.
On the flipside, I'm going to compile a list of Bible versus that support progressive positions on a myriad of subjects. Maybe if someone in the press were to read these verses at the next Bush press conference, he might lose some support from his precious "religious right." Assuming they weren't all hypocritical, anyways.
Leviticus 19:33-34 (New International Version)
33 " 'When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. 34 The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.
On School Prayer:
Matthew 6:5
5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
On Illegal Immigration:

Deuteronomy 10:18-20
18 He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing. 19 And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt. 20 Fear the LORD your God and serve him. Hold fast to him and take your oaths in his name.

On Social Security, Medicare, Welfare:

35 " 'If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident, so he can continue to live among you. 36 Do not take interest of any kind [a] from him, but fear your God, so that your countryman may continue to live among you.
On Guantanamo Bay:
Malachi 3:5
5 "So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive aliens of justice, but do not fear me," says the LORD Almighty.
I'm sure there are many, many more goodies out there. If anyone can find any more, I'll post 'em.
Happy Hunting.
