During the last few months I've been recieving almost daily entreaties from the Party to send in funds, to do this, to do that. Dr. Dean has been especially strident in his emails, invoking the spectre of horror that accompanies the visions of the billions in Repug war chests, compared to our pitiful pennies. Finally, I sent this letter back. It's now been a month since anything has appeared in my inbox from the DNC, or for that matter, any other Dem site. I thought I was minding my manners, but you be the judge.
Dear Dr. Dean,
I have the highest respect for you and your accomplishments. I get your newsletter and your frequent appeals for funds and to volunteer my time for the party. I am an old, (and I do mean old) party loyalist, however, even with you at the helm, the sense of cohesiveness in the party seems to be lacking. I'm hesitant to become active unless there's a message that activates me. I think I speak for a majority of Americans that have grown weary of poll tested messages and soundbites.
In the past, perhaps those techniques might have been sufficient, but no longer. Governor, it's 1929 again. The inhabitants inside the beltway still seem unaware. Maybe you do. Maybe you realize that we're nearly out of time on such a wide range of issues and topics that the damage is almost irreversible.
The fractured party plank must be mended. The time for chatter and dithering must cease. Let's set forth unassailable positions that resound with a majority of Americans and promise to act on those proposals in the first 100 days. Remember Roosevelt? Let's say what we're going to do, then do it. The November elections are ours for the taking, all that's required is spine and unwavering conviction.
It's time to lay the groundwork. What do Americans want? Dedicated individuals willing to serve the country. We have them. They're lining up at the gate. Lets give them a unified voice, asking only their promise to work toward a common agenda, a common sense agenda.
As a person well acquainted with the resources of the Internet, I'm sure you're well aware of what needs to be done. You know as well as anyone how to inspire action. Take the most common and agreed on themes and let's push these to the forefront. We have so little time now!
The Planks
Single Payer Universal Health. There needs to be no debate here. It must be done. Period.
Immediate drawdown from Iraq. Murtha's right and everyone knows it.
Rescind NAFTA, CAFTA and withdraw from the WTO. These were horrible decisions. Reverse them.
Order enforcement of laws penalizing employers of Illegal Aliens. Fix broken borders.
Examine and redraw all trade agreements. America wants fair trade, not free trade.
Enactment of a fair minimum wage.
Publicly financed elections.
Immediate commencement of judicial hearings on George W. Bush' possible criminal actions.
Just these few promised resolutions brings nearly 70% of the country into the fold. The Corporate America experiment has failed. The citizens know it. It's time to return to responsible governance, with leaders willing to do the people's bidding.
We as Americans are unwilling to watch the continued decline our nation into a third world country. When we can no longer produce our own clothes, something's wrong. When we can no longer produce our own machine tools, it's alarming. When Riyadh and Peking can dictate our economy, it's downright scary. We've lost our way. We've had no one of vision and nerve to do what's right in a very long time
2006 might be the last chance we have to begin to undo the damage we've caused not only at home, but around the world.
I implore you Dr. Dean. Let's take this to the next level. Let's make this a forum for action, not empty rhetoric. The time for the toe in the water, which way the wind blows, has come to an end.
Deeds speak louder than words.
