As much as I enjoy irritating conservatives, gay and straight, it's not the reason I'm once again playing the "Nazi" card and drawing analogies between pre-Nazi Germany and contemporary America. I'm just a stubborn old Jew burdened by a moderate understanding of history and a great believer in learning from the past rather than living as if the world began last Monday.
And until such time as Bush is impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors and the Republicans are booted out of Congress for betraying their constitutional responsibilities and the public trust, the analogy stands.
Imagine if physicians viewed symptoms anew with each case, as if there were no medical texts or anything to be learned from experience. And yet so many of us think nothing of liviing our lives in such a manner and treating society as if the societal ills and mistakes of the past had no relevance to the present problem. And, of course, Republicans and many so-called conservatives bank on this narrow perspective. Their power base depends on the unimformed, the short-sighted and the easily misled.
But today's history lesson focuses on the big gay bubble and the prevalent belief that the current degree of acceptance and permissiveness is solidly based and unquestionably endurable.
But as we bask in the liberal light of certain major urban centers and media attention, the demonization of gays continues day by day and state by state, protected by the First Amendment and nurtured and supported by a political party and a White House that for whatever reasons sees the gay card, coupled with the terrorism card, as a surefire way to draw more and more unconstitutional power unto themselves.
