Israel is a sovereign nation. I've often felt they should be mindful of outside advice, especially when they've been so egregiously stupid as to carry on a 35 year occupation. Really, what was wrong with them? But as far as military operations go, they'll do what they want, and I really don't see much reason to make noise over it. When they've been attacked militarily, they've responded in their own fashion and few have had reason to complain. They're exceptionally well-armed and extremely good at short-term strategy. If somebody steps up, they deal with them. Hopefully they've finally learned some lessons regarding long-term occupation, but with Iran that's not an issue.
The deal is actually fairly simple. If Iran is going to nuke Israel, there is a fairly large chance that Israel will be able to retaliate via nuclear sub, and it won't be entirely disagreeable for the US to mop up the job. If Iran is going to nuke Israel, they will have brought it upon themselves. That's what nuclear conflict is about.
If, however, Israel decides to go for prevention, one cannot argue they were not provoked. If that is the case, however, it is incumbent upon the US to remain entirely independent of the operation. Reason number one is that it's militarily useless, Israel is perfectly capable of preemptive strikes. Reason number two, the important one, is that if Israel wants to play some poker, Israel had better be willing to back up its bets. It is far past the point of needing us as the big boy bully backing it up. It has hundreds of nukes and a top-tier air force.
The answer, then, is hands-off. This isn't our problem, and if Israel feels it's their problem, that's their business. What we can do in that situation is provide some diplomatic effort to get Iran to forsake condemnations and threats towards Israel. Efforts towards making Iran non-nuclear are pretty much futile in my book, but they can be made to understand that they'd better be using those nukes to prevent invasion. First strike needs to be far, far out of Iran's consideration.
Of course, this involves sane thought coming out of the White House, and we don't get that anymore. Those were the days...
