In my local paper, there is a LTE calling for a repeal of gas taxes so the cost of gasoline will be lower. This is precisely the wrong response. If the oil-comapny claims are correct, the prices are so high because any lower prices would lead to more consumption than there is production. Skip, for a moment, the question of whether anyone on dKos believes the oil companies. If anything like this is correct, then lower taxes wouldn't lead to lower prices; they would lead to higher profits.
Let's take the oil com, panies at their word. This is the price which clears the market. In that case, the only question is: Who gets the windfall? Under present rules, Exxon (and the other oil giants) get the windfall. What we need is a tax based on the price; then the federal government, which is currently running a massive deficit, would get a share of the windfall.
This will never happen, of course, the US government is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the oil companies.
