Never before in all history has any city government supported and approved of dumping anything so massive into any U.S. River...as the remaining one-half the old Fuller Warren I-95 Expressway Bridge which our Mayor and Council and DOT and Waterways Commission and Governor now choose to dump into the St. Johns River in...
downtown Jacksonville, Florida.
Never.
This is the stupidest insult to a river I can imagine.

Never.
This is the stupidest insult to a river I can imagine.
We will put debris into the channel, interfering with our future shipping.
We will dump massive amounts of material down deep into the nastiest most evil goop, so that as we then attempt to dig back up some of it, we will cause the resuspension of lead, cadmium, PCBs, beryllium, arsenic, mercury, and all kinds of poisons back into the water column.
And why do we do this? Well, for NO good reason. Mainly because some DOT guys might otherwise go to prison for having started the dumping even while the permit clearly said NO.
The money issue is interesting.
It would cost our city only $700,000 to convert what remains of this old bridge into a wonderful pedestrian promenade, with benches, lights, railing, safety, parking, restrooms....
The Mayor's own study proves this, even though the Mayor had hoped his study would prove a much much higher cost for the conversion.
But it will cost the FDOT about ten million dollars to do the demolition.
So...we could save money AND protect our channel AND protect our environment AND provide our city with a fantastic pedestrian promenade all at once, if only we could persuade Governor Jeb and Mayor Peyton to do the right thing, stop the project, and help incarcerate the FDOT boys who started dumping even while the original permit said NO.
By the way, despite the new permit which allows for this dumping, the lease on the submerged lands involved, signed by Governor Chiles, says there can be no such permit which allows for this dumping.
Please help save the old Fuller Warren.
Call Mayor Peyton. (904) 630-1776.
Call your Council Members: http://www.coj.net/...
Or, if you are not from Jacksonville,
then please email Mayor Peyton and tell him he will be the subject of ridicule all over the world.
John Peyton <jpeyton@coj.net>, Phone:904/630-1776
Governor Jeb Bush: jeb@myflorida.com Phone: 850/488-4441

Never never never has anything this big been dumped into any U.S. River.
Never.
It would be awful to create this new precedent of dumping something this big into a river.
Please help.
Sincerely,
Andy Johnson
