The Bush Administration likes to get it's way. If not this way, then that way, so long as the same palms get greased. But, you would think they would learn that touching a hot stove will only get you burned; something most 4-year olds understand. I wonder how it feels to be a GOP legislator up for reelection this fall with the President throwing you under a train.
Bush will seek to allow a Dubai firm to operate 9 domestic U.S. military supply plants.
WASHINGTON, April 27 -- President Bush is expected on Friday to announce his approval of a deal under which a Dubai-owned company would take control of nine plants in the United States that manufacture parts for American military vehicles and aircraft, say two administration officials familiar with the terms of the deal.
The officials, who were granted anonymity so they could speak freely about something the president had not yet announced, said that the final details had not yet been set and that Mr. Bush might put conditions on the transaction to keep military technology in the United States.
But his action is almost certain to attract scrutiny in Congress, because of the political furor that erupted over the administration's approval of a deal earlier this spring that would have given another Dubai-owned company, Dubai Ports World, leases to operate several American port terminals through its acquisition of a British company, the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. This will result in a debate. It is not in the U.S. interest to let any foreign-power owned firm operate our military plants. It is certainly not debatable that spreading sensitive military technology is not in the U.S. interest.
Is this likely to cause a stir over the next few days? What will be the result? Are the same parties set to gain as were frustrated in the DP World Dubai ports controversy? What should U.S. policy be for the operation of U.S. military plants? What are the limits of globalism? How should the Democrats respond?
