It gets curioser and curioser. On the heels of the attack postcard cited by Councilman in a previous thread, comes this letter. It tries to look like a personal letter from Deidra Ierardi in New Britain, but the small print at the bottom reads "Paid for by Friends of Joe Lieberman." Ms. Ierardi is, apparently, a member of the New Britain BOE, although the letter never says so.
The letter is sloppily reproduced with ink smears. Full text, with emphasis added, is below the fold (with emphasis added).
Dear Friend,
As you may know, I've made a decision to support Senator Joe Lieberman for re-election to the U.S. Senate. When the nominations are called, I will vote for the Senator. I'm writing to tell you why.
Electing progressive people to office is important. In 1980, I supported Senator Ted Kennedy over incumbent President Jimmy Carter. I not only supported Kennedy -- I quit my job and hit the national campaign trail to help him. We wanted to challenge authority -- we questioned Carter's ability to lead the nation after the "gas crisis" and the terrorist taking of the hostages. We waged a valiant effort. And we lost. It split the Democratic Party for years.
It's ok to disagree with the Senator on the war in Iraq. I have questions about why Senator Lieberman would continue to support a war in Iraq that seems impossible to win, at the expense of our dedicated, young troops and needy citizens at home. I believe we should confront the Senator and his staff on these questions. They can take the heat and they'll listen to your opinions.
There are other issues to consider. Senator Lieberman's record on Children's Defense Fund issues is 89%. He voted right 8 of 9 times -- the one wrong is for missing a vote. Whenever I called his office for support on votes for anti-hunger programs, community action agencies, energy assistance, and education funding, Senator Lieberman's support has been unwavering.
I don't want a split democratic party (sic), so I'm choosing to go with the most progressive guy...who has a record...who can win. This week's Quinnipiac Poll shows Joe leading Ned 65% to 19%. I'm not voting for the perfect candidate, I'm not protesting the war with my delegate vote, and I'm not giving up on someone who has worked hard for Connecticut's citizens for the past thirty years.
Thanks for considering my reasoning.
Let the considering begin and let's start with the fact that a member of the Board of Education doesn't know enough to capitalize Democratic Party. But that may just be because this was written by one of the hacks on Sean Smith's hack-ridden staff.
I also hope Joe severly reprimanded her for "undermining the president's credibility" back in 1980. She did so "at our peril" you know.
Snarkiness aside, I find this letter absolutely jaw-dropping in its wildly floundering desperation. Does the Lieberman campaign seriously think they can win by pointing out to people what a disaster their candidate is? And by raising Ned's profile? Or is this a dirty trick, a forgery by some shadowy anti-Joe faction?
I laughed out loud at the bit about taking the heat and listening to your opinions. We have video proof that Joe can't take the heat and doesn't want to listen to anyone's opinion.
I could go on, but why should I have all the fun? Who wants to be the first to tear this to shreds?
