A trip to New Orleans should be required for anyone running for Federal office in November....
To piggyback on Delaware Dem's great New Orleans
photo essay, there's a lot of groups doing amazing work in New Orleans right now, who can use volunteers.
ACORN is one of my favorites:
ACORN is gutting and cleaning the homes of low and moderate income residents free of charge. Volunteers will be provided with safety equipment and tools and will be removing the contents of the home, pulling out drywall, removing nails, and doing a variety of other jobs. We've gutted more than 1,000 homes since December and want to gut at least 1,000 more by the end of the summer. We take both individuals and groups and can guarantee housing until June 1st, but will likely be able to provide housing after that date. Our past volunteers have found it a messy but satisfying experience. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

I was down there for a week with ACORN gutting houses in April. Pictures of what you'd be doing are up on my blog
here and
here. And also see
"how to gut a house" on ACORN's website.
Other groups to volunteer with include Relief Spark, Bayou Liberty Relief, Common Ground, Habitat for Humanity, and Hilltop Rescue.
