The headline in the
New York Times is:
"Rather Quitting as CBS Anchor in Abrupt Move."
The chattering on cable last night, as well as the reporting in today's papers, featured phrases such as: "quitting," "pushed out," "forced out," "stepping down."
The Times adds some color to their coverage with another value-laden word: "abrupt." I will leave it to the Kos community to determine whether a November announcement of a March retirement is "abrupt."
Did I say "retirement?" That seems to be the one word missing from the discourse. In fact, the Times article itself grants that it has been widely known for months that Rather planned on retiring from his anchor post soon. So here is my main point:
DAN RATHER IS 73 YEARS OLD!!!! HE IS NOT QUITTING; HE'S FREAKING RETIRING!!!!!
There, I feel much better now.
