GNN posted the relevant article, "
DU's Effect on DNA Established", and I doubt that many of us here are surprised to hear it verified that DU does indeed cause cancer.
"Northern Arizona University biochemist Diane Stearns has established that when cells are exposed to uranium, the uranium binds to DNA and the cells acquire mutations... some of which can lead to various cancers."
"Stearns' research... confirms what many have suspected for some time - that uranium can damage DNA as a heavy metal, independently of its radioactive properties."
The whole article's not much longer than a DK diary, so the two above quotes (my favorite is the one concering the nonpresence of radioactivity) pretty much sum it up, when topped off with this: "While other heavy metals are known to bind to DNA, Stearns and her team were the first to identify this characteristic with uranium."
I can recall reading theories about GIs drinking from pallets of diet soda that had been sitting in the desert sun (aspartame + heat = formaldehyde = Gulf War Syndrome) as well as a few other theories.. I do know that the DU theories always felt a lot more credible (though I gave up on soda a while ago anyway) but were frustratingly unproven. Not any more! Spread the word.
