An intense new soundwave weaving machine presents itself in the form of
The Disco Biscuits. Take some Particle, Phish, Pink Floyd undertones and Dead-like crescendos put it all to a fast funky house beat and then add the savant-like solos from this unassuming band's members. Not a single person was sitting in the audience, even in the balcony. Their followers were friendly and inclusive. The promoter was friendly and appreciative for the top notch crowd. I saw one of the band members run up to him and thank him prior to the show for being upright and working with them.
The groove gets in you, they let it percolate and vibrate then shoot it out in different directions. Take a listen to some samples off of their new CD
The Wind at Four to Fly here, just click on "streaming tracks" and select either
Voices Insane or
Caterpillar.
The four members are very much their own characters, retaining their own preferred style and delivery. This could lead to tragedy in a less talented band but much like King Crimson, The Disco Biscuits have learned to tame their animals.
Two negatives for me would be the sound system and the beer. It seemed that the sound was not worked on well enough for the space, the highnotes had a tendency to meld together and the bass was reverberating too much in the delicate acoustics of the Palace. They should have cut the beer sales off earlier as many of the folks ended up spilling beer during the second set.
But these are personal preferences and it is impossible to make everyone happy so no harm done. Overall a very enjoyable experience was had by all.
I've always been horrible with remembering set lists but if you go to their site soon they should have a live download of the show for you.
Have any hot bands you'd like me or others to know about? Please tell us in the comments. Oh and if you are in Baltimore there is a great festival coming up where you can catch the Biscuits, it's called Starscape Music and Arts Festival.
