By now, you've seen the disgusting ads by the Competitive Enterprise Institute, touting the wonders of injecting unprecedented levels of CO2 into the atmosphere.
http://streams.cei.org/ if you need to a reason to claw your eyes out.
This is a long standing trend in industry and republican politics. Whether the "Wise Use" Movement for deregulating natural resource harvesting or the Discovery Institute for promoting non-scientific teaching against evolution, Republicans like deceiving people about the industry groups that drive their policy. They know no one will take seriously an ad put out by a conglomeration of oil companies pooling their money, so they create an organization with a sensible, centrist sounding name. Or, if their balls are really brassy, they give it a liberal sounding name. I call it "False Flag" marketing.
This has been going on decades with no real counter from liberal groups. It is time to change that.
We can also make new groups with fun names. Anyone can form a non profit group called anything. Its time to fight back with the reverse tactic - ads promoting selfish, shortsighted republican causes, from organizations that clearly indicate their bias. So, instead of some bullshit ad campaign like "CO2: We Call it Life" from the "Competitive Enterprise Institute", we need a campaign called "Who Cares About Global Warming: Save Our Profits!" by the "Rich Republicans with Oil Stocks". Or "A Lifetime of Debt is No Big Deal" by the "Credit Lenders Against Bankruptcy Protection".
Countering the deceptive ads with brutally honest ads works on multiple levels. Not only would they make the negative effects of republican policy evident, they would also weaken the credibility of the false flag organizations through mockery. Mockery is a powerful force in the populace, and its time to use it more.
