Opposition to the so-called
Health Insurance Marketplace Modernization and Affordability Act, (S.1955), a.k.a the Enzi bill, is mounting every day. As we
wrote the other day, this is a very dangerous bill that would endanger the healthcare of
85 million Americans by overriding existing state laws that guarantee coverage of crucial services health care services.
Last Wednesday, Families USA and other national groups sponsored a National Call-In Day to Stop the Enzi bill that was wildly successful: More than 13,000 Americans (including many Kossacks) called their Senators to oppose the bill. So next Monday, May 8th, we'll hold a Second Nat'l Call-In Day. Keep the number handy--1-800-828-0498--and make sure to call your Senators! If calling's not for you, check out our action alert instead.
In other news, the CBO has released a damning report on the Enzi bill. More on the flip.
In other news, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a
new report that confirms what we've been saying about the Enzi bill:
* It would make health care more expensive for individuals and families who are older and sicker.
* The Enzi bill's promise of lower premiums for small businesses that purchase coverage through associations' Small Business Health Plans (SBHPs) will only benefit the young and healthy at the expense of those who are older and sicker Americans.
* The bill would lower premiums by only 2 to 3 percent on average, an paltry one-time savings, at the cost of losing vital state-guaranteed benefits as well as state-based protections that keep premiums from skyrocketing when older workers are hired or workers become ill.
* The bill would cause 100,000 people who have and rely on health insurance to lose it.
A bill that wholly undermines the very concept of health insurance isn't reform--it's a giveaway to the insurance industry. This bill needs to be stopped--and you can help. Please take part in our Second Nat'l Call-In Day--Monday, May 8th That number again: 1-800-828-0498. We expect a vote on Wednesday, so call your Senators and send them a clear message: vote NO on the Enzi bill.
