No, this isn't another diary about my distinguished
congressman's drinking and driving habits. This about a situation that's likely repeating itself all over our country. As poll after poll shows the public catching on to the moral and philsophical bankruptcy of the republican agenda, more and more republicans are swerving toward the middle of the road. Mine is no exception.
Despite receiving over $120,000 from big oil over that past couple of election cycles. And despite repeatedly voting against raising CAFE standards. And despite voting again and again for multi-billion dollar tax breaks for the oil industry, Sweeney suddenly decides it's time to appear moderate/centrist on this issue.
Now, Sweeney has a long history of playing the "Catch and release" game, whereby the house republican leadership counts the votes before a bill is voted on, and allows a select few republicans to vote against a given bill in order to appear 'moderate' to the folks back home.
This is much more than that. This is a desperate attempt to avoid being swept up in what could be a Democratic landslide in November. Sweeney is now calling for an investigation by the FTC into possible price gouging by his former benefactors. In other words, the Sweeney is ditch his financial benfactors of many years for simple polictical expediency.
In his mad rush toward the middle, Sweeney is casting aside his friends and associates like nobody's business. From his former mentor Tom Delay, to the guy who nick-named him "Congressman Kick-ass", no friend of John's is safe from his sudden conversion.
Fortunately, the people of New York's 20th Congressional District have a real chance to throw this bum out. We have a great candidate in Kirsten Gillibrand. She has a real chance of dislodging one of Bush's favorite toadies. Please consider sending some love her way, and help us clean the House this November.
