At first I was shocked and a little bit sick when I watched Ann Coulter (and who wears a little black cocktail dress to a morning talk show) was interviewed by Matt Lauer on Good Morning America. I mean, her comments were so far beyond the pale that I just could not believe someone was actually saying these things. Her insanity certainly came through loud and clear that morning.
Then the anger kicked in as winger and winger if not defended her (see Matalin et al) then refused to denounce her comments. What the bleep is up with these people anyway. If truly indeed 9/11 changed everything then shouldn't the widows and families of those killed that day be in a place of honor. If they say or do something you don't agree with, say actually get the 9/11 commission formed, shouldn't you, as a good little winger, at least respect their loss.
Anyway, I digress.
I figured this out this morning while reading Digby's excellent piece with all this RedState angst. Well, faux angst as far as I can tell. And the reason hit me why non of the visible Republican talking heads are calling for her to apologize or even really thinking anything much is wrong with what was said.
The Republicans use Ann to push the envelope of what is considered to be acceptable discourse (or what passes for discourse in this political world right now). She pushes way beyond what is acceptable to say today and then tomorrow that line has shifted a bit to the right so the next person coming along can make an outrageous claim and no one will blink.
She is desensitizing society to this rabid hate filled right wing crap that passes for conversation and pretty soon, if we aren't careful, this will be common water cooler conversation at work or at church or at home.
Happy thoughts.
