That's right, you read that correctly. It was an amazing piece of language jujitsu that I HAD to comment on it. Bear with me, I'll lead you through this.
On Kudlow and Company, Kudlow was talking about the Democrats "New Direction" plan (interestingly, the only place on TV I've seen it mentioned...no wonder people don't think Democrats have any ideas, TV never bothers to tell people about them), calling it essentially "cut and run & tax hikes." He then proceeded to drone the familiar Republican argument that if they oppose continuing the temporary tax cuts, Democrats would be dishonest claiming they are not gonna raise taxes. Kudlow was not expecting the response from the Dem representative
I cannot find a transcript for it and did not catch the representatives name, please help (it was on today 9/14/06 at 4 PM Pacific time).
Anyways to the response: The Democrat told Kudlow that the temporary tax cut was a dirty ploy to mask the true cost of the tax cuts going into the future (because they intended all along to have it continue) and also to but when pressed by Kudlow with the "aren't you tax hikers" attack he said "We should call it what it is...a republican tax hike. It is they who made tax hike temporary in a cynical ploy to mislead America and hurt Democrats. They made it temporary, they are the tax hikers not the Democrats."
Brilliant!! I always see that "don't support continuing the tax cut so they support tax hikes" canard and it pissed me off. This is great response. It heaps the tax raiser label on the Republicans and blames it on them. The Democrat is then free to explain that the average joe will retain his cut in their plan but profit flushed execs and oil companies will lose their cuts etc.. etc..
So what do you guys think about "Republican tax hike"?
