Kelly Keck, who is challenging Republican incumbent Clifford Crouch of Guilford to represent the 107th District in the NYS Assembly gained the endorsement of the Working Families Party this week.
Keck explained the significance of the latest endorsement, "Clean elections is one of the major planks in my platform. Without fair campaigns, the odds in favor of true reform in Albany are not good. The Working Families Party has been working diligently for many years to implement clean election reforms, so I am pleased to have the support of a party led by like-minded folks."
Since its
founding in 1998, the WFP has become an important force in New York State politics. The party has engendered a serious commitment to fight for many issues in addition to clean elections -
living wages, affordable housing, accessible health care, high-quality public education, clean air and clean water. Keck has already been endorsed by the County Democratic Committees in
Broome,
Chenango,
Delaware, and
Ulster counties. The 107th district includes parts of all four counties.
Keck said this week marked the next phase in the campaign, "In addition to gaining endorsements, I am now focusing on getting signatures for the designating petitions and meeting as many constituents as possible in person." Campaign stops included appearances at parades in Smithville Flats as well as Stamford, where the candidate resides.
Keck said, "The response from the people I've met at meetings and on the streets during parades has been more than encouraging. People are dissatisfied with many incumbents at the national and state level. I have had long conversations with former Republicans who have become so fed up that they have actually changed their party registrations. I have been encouraged by the turnout of candidates endorsed by the Democratic and third parties, while few of the Republican incumbents are turning up at public events."
Keck also made a stop at a hearing in Norwich convened by state Senators regarding the proposed NYRI high-voltage transmission line which would go though three counties in the 107th district. Keck said, "Although I am pleased the public has a forum to express their opposition to this environmentally malignant project, it is somewhat disingenuous of Republican leaders to jump on the bandwagon now that widespread opposition has been raised. Legislators such as my opponent, Clifford Crouch, voted against regulation in the electric industry but now they are changing their stances."
