Debating Political Philosophy prompted me to think about a unifying theme for the '06 elections that would serve the Democratic Party better than the
New Direction for America.
Behind the flip is what I came up with...
A unifying theme has to be something that even Republicans could rally around, like the beginning of the old Superman TV show, "Truth, Justice, and the American Way". This led me to:
"Ensuring Liberty, Providing Opportunity, and Securing the Future of America"
Which is easy enough to get people behind, I mean, who isn't for all of these things? But just like the "New Direction" my little sound byte doesn't mean a damn thing without some substance behind it. How do we do add some substance without sounding like we're preaching at people? Simple questioning, followed up by a splash of humor, a dash of smack down, and a whole lot of truth.
If the Republicans have secured the country, then why has the threat level remained unchanged?
If Republicans support the troops, then why do we have no concrete exit strategy to bring them home to safety?
If Republicans believe in liberty, then why do they feel the need to illegally spy on Americans?
If Republicans believe in efficient government, then why are they spending weeks on politically motivated distractions like the gay marriage amendment instead of balancing the budget?
Last time I checked, gay people didn't fly any planes into buildings. Gay people aren't setting IED's in Iraq. Yet that's the most "important" piece of legislation they have tackled this year?
In 2000 the Republicans said it was time to give the government back to the adults. After six years of Republicans in the White House and Congress, I couldn't agree more; it is time to give government back to the adults. The Democratic Party believes that liberty is more than a buzz word, that security is about building confidence, not exploiting fear, and that opportunity for all can only flourish when both are revered with actions, not just words.
There's my idea. It's not perfect, but it's an idea. What ideas do you have?
Ed. Note - This is my first diary here at DailyKos. I've written elsewhere, but I've always been too intimidated to write here. After commenting yesterday on some things I feel a little more confident. Bear with me, I'll catch up at some point.
