This past Friday, President Bush was in Albuquerque where he raised $375,000 for Rep. Heather Wilson's re-election campaign. The following is a summary of his remarks that is cross posted at the Madrid for Congress blog.
In
Friday's speech, President Bush heaped praise upon his good friend and loyal ally, Rep. Heather Wilson. From tax cuts for the wealthy to the War in Iraq to the Medicare Part D Disaster, Bush praised Wilson for supporting his right wing agenda.
Let's take a look at some of the specifics:
It's important to have people in the United States Congress who understand the stakes of the fight in Iraq and complete the mission. And Heather Wilson is such a person.
Translation: Heather Wilson supports my disastrous quagmire in Iraq. I need her in Congress to make sure that I can continue to ship billions of taxpayer dollars over to Iraq.
President Bush doesn't have a plan to win in Iraq and that's just fine with Heather Wilson. He needs her to rubber stamp this war that's dragged on for three long years with no end in sight. He knows that this election will turn on the war and that a vote for Heather Wilson is a vote for the President's disastrous and incompetantly prosecuted war.
Heather and I like for you to spend your own money.
President Bush made these remarks to an audience of people that can afford to pay $1,000 for lunch. He once referred to these high rollers as "the haves and the have mores -- his base." When it comes to the President's tax cuts for the rich, Heather Wilson's voted for all of them. And, the people that can afford the $1,000-a-plate lunch certainly appreciate it - even if it's driving our country into more and more debt.
What they want is fiscal sanity in Washington, D.C. That's what they want.
President Bush, the man who sent hundreds of billions of dollars over to Iraq, has never vetoed a single pork barrel spending bill and presided over the largest deficits in American history is talking about fiscal sanity?
Democrats know how to balance budgets and manage your money - we did it under President Clinton. The Republicans? Their borrow and spend policies have produced skyrocketing debt that our children will have to pay off.
And thanks to the leadership of Heather Wilson, I was able to sign a modern Medicare bill
He's talking about the Medicare Part D Disaster - the costly, confusing and corrupt legislation written by and for the pharmaceutical companies. The legislation that will cost New Mexico taxpayers
$5 billion because Congress can't negotiate with the pharmaceutical companies for cheaper prescription drug prices. The same law that costs the average senior
$119 in confusion taxes just to enroll. Oh, and, the same program that many seniors currently have to pay a fine to enroll.
The No Child Left Behind Act, that Heather was a strong supporter of, has helped change America for the better.
The war. The Medicare Part D Disaster. Tax cuts for the wealthy. And, education policy. On all of these issues that New Mexicans care about, Heather Wilson's marched lockstep with President Bush. No Child has certainly left many New Mexico children behind. You can credit it with
eliminating music education programs in Albuquerque's schools. The New Mexico legislature has had to spend tons of time
fixing the problems with NCLB - mainly because the bill isn't working for New Mexico students and teachers.
The President concluded his remarks by pointing out something that we've known for an awful long time:
I'm close to Heather, you know.
Yes, Mr. President, we know.
Fight Back.
