In today's New York Times Washington edition a front page story tells the tale of the new Republican spin on the Iraq War (and let us call this as it is--the Iraq Occupation). After waiting all day for some erudite diary about this article and finding none and not even seeing the article on the Times website I am taking the reins. If this was already posted I will withdraw the diary upon notice or some TU can make it go away. More below the fold.
The Republicans have apparently been pretty skittish and rightfully so about the opinion polls and the upcoming elections. Scary stuff when the American public stops supporting your dirty little war.
A series of high level meetings this month among White House and Congressional officials
argued that it woud be a politically fatal mistake for Republicans to walk away from the war in an election year.
How sad they must stick to a failing course instead.
Following the meetings a document was distributed to provide ammunition against the Democrats from now til the midterm elections:
that the withdrawal advocated by the Democrats would mean thousands of troops have died for nothing, would give extremists a launch pad from which to build an Islamo-fascist empire, and would hand the United States its most humiliating defeat since VietNam
How many more must die before these guys figure out that the occupation is a loser on every plane? Where do they get the idea that Islamo-fascism is any kind of real threat? Do they even know the meaning of the words they choose to use? Looks like more fearmongering just as we have come to expect.
The article continues to say the effect of withdrawal would be
leave enemies controlling vast oil reserves, the third largest in the world
Finally we get near to the truth. This invasion and occupation was always about gaining American control of the oil fields.
Now when are the Democrats or any other opposition group going to come up with ideas to counter the well-oiled machine that is the Republicon party today? We need not only attractive slogans but we need to keep the facts in front of folk. Ignorance is the field on which the Republicons play best. Facts will hopefully allay both the fears and the ignorance that seems to run rampant in our country.
Without some degree of better organization than I have seen recently I fear for our Fall. possum
