So I saw an
article on Google news talking about Dick Cheney's visit to Chicago. The headline was "Cheney in Chicago: Economy glows but nation still in peril". You just know, of course, I had to read that one for a good laugh.
First of all Cheney starts with this well debunked doozy:
"More Americans are working today than ever before," Cheney said at the Merc. "American workers are taking home bigger paychecks and their standard of living is on the rise."
Yes, that's right. There's also more americans than ever before. Furthermore, the rate of growth amongst americans has been higher than the rate of growth amongst working americans since 2000. File this under the "damn lie" portion of the statistics spectrum.
Credit to Cheney though, he did tell the truth for a moment:
"A low tax policy continues to be at the center of our agenda," Cheney said. "Let's keep taxes low in this country."
It is definitely at the center of their agenda. They recently went so far as to have emergency legislation to help cut taxes for the wealthy even further. How, noble.
It continues:
His speech was interrupted once by applause when he called for the permanent abolition of the estate tax. Cheney also said "earmarks" -- congressional pork projects tucked away in unrelated legislation -- have gotten out of control. He said the president needs the authority of a line item veto to end such political giveaways.
Now why would a bunch of really wealthy stock traders support an end to the estate tax? Can't imagine. But my favorite part is how he argues the solution to congressional pork is to give the president all the more power. Not only giving the president more power, but giving him a power that the Supreme Court reviewed and struck down previously.
Then he goes on:
"No one can guarantee we won't be hit again," Cheney said. "It is a very real threat."
911 911 911 911. Must be a coincidence that a terror cell, in Miami (if you can consider them organized enough to really be a "cell"), that was plotting against the Sears tower is busted on the day that Cheney is in Chicago.
I need to be a script writer for these guys. How easy is that job? Everything is going well. Terrorists are going to try to kill you. Cut taxes. Try the veal.
