This morning's
Providence Journal has former President Bill Clinton speaking plain about what today's GOP leaders are all about in a campaign appearance for Democrat
Sheldon Whitehouse's Senate campaign:
"I like Senator Chafee. I liked his dad [late Sen. John H. Chafee]. But the truth is, it's not their Republican Party anymore," said Clinton. "The people who run this government don't represent even the Republican Party . . . they represent a small sliver of the Republican Party today that is almost totally dominated by exceedingly conservative white males from the South and West. "Their number-one priority is to concentrate wealth and power," said Clinton. "They think secrecy and unacountablity is a virtue."
Linc Chafee and the Queens of Maine need to be shown the door. They are decent people who enable rotten people and that cannot stand.
As a true American hero
Sen. Margaret Chase Smith once said:
"...a Republican regime embracing a philosophy that lacks political integrity or intellectual honesty would prove equally disastrous to this Nation. The Nation sorely needs a Republican victory. But I don't want to see the Republican Party ride to political victory on the four horsemen of calumny--fear, ignorance, bigotry and smear."
Sadly, her worst fears were realized.
