Folks, this is what "having their back" is all about. Even though they may not be our representative, they need to know we are on their side. Take a minute to write and thank them.
Sir,
I wish merely to commend you for your stand agaisnt this unconstitutional amendment to prohibit burning the American flag.
I am a regular employee of an international relief organization and have resided for several years overseas. I am sometimes disheartened by what I see done by the leadership of our country, but it is great public servants like yourself who give me hope for our future.
I truly believe that the people who will make the future of our party and the future of our country are going to come from the mid- and mountain west. People like Gov. Schweitzer and Richardson, Sens. Salazar and Nelson and of course, your very own "Big Ed" Schultz are the leaders Americans will increasingly look to as we try to get ourselves out of the hole Bush and Co. have dug us into.
As a Chicagoan/midwesterner, I have had the great good fortune to visit you state several times and I enjoyed every minute of it. Teddy Roosevelt NP is one of the unheralded jewels of our NP system. And Fargo is a GREAT city.
As I said, I have lived overseas for many years, working with the victims of war, natural disaster and the like, mostly in what was called the third world. Natural disasters and wars are a fact of life. What is most dispiriting is how many countries are afflicted by the worst pestilence of all, bad governance. This amendment is indicative of the worst form of bad governance: coerced allegiance to symbols. In many of the places I have worked, symbols are manipulated and co-opted by those seeking power over others, the welfare of the people or the country be damned. This is another step, a big one, to be sure, on the road to tyranny. Please stand firm.
Sincerely,
Sourmash
