SO I saw Dobson's
commentary on gay marriage on CNN.com and remarked to a few friends how misplaced a priority this is, not to mention how ridiculous it is to say gay marriage threatens the "5,000" year old institution of straight marriage.
Choice quote:
The senators who voted against marriage this month knew exactly what they were doing. The truth is they don't give a hoot about the traditional family. The majority of them have voted repeatedly to weaken or undermine this great institution. Check the record.
Thoughts on marriage aside, I couldn't help but go off when a friend replied "oh, it's a bigger issue than you think."
Gay marriage has never killed a soldier in Iraq.
More on the flip...
Gay marriage has never caused a child to go hungry. Gay marriage has never caused gang violence in our cities. Gay marriage will not smuggle in terrorist weapons through our ports. Gay marriage will not increase our federal debt. Gay marriage will not cause Social Security go go bankrupt. Gay marriage will not force our children to go to underfunded, understaffed schools. Gay marriage will not take away your civil liberties. Gay marriages will not steal elections. Gay marriage will not ruin our environment. Gay marriage does not cause high oil prices. Gay marriage does not start wars we cannot win.
Maybe, just maybe, if we took care of all the other issues facing America I wouldn't be so angry that these issues take weeks of Congressional debate and dominate the media. Maybe if the people who live such comfortable, cozy lives that they can take time to worry about gay people getting married would wake up and see that there are a lot of things wrong in our country, I'd be a little more accepting.
Whether or not there is a God, and regardless of his views on gay marriage... I ask one Christian to look me in the eyes and tell me that Jesus would have rather gone to Rome and lobbied for a ban on gay marriage than help the sick and poor.
