It seems that the most common defence of homosexuality is to say that "homosexuality is not a choice", and that you shouldn't fault someone for a fact about themselves that was not of their choosing.
But what if it is a choice for some people, and they just choose to be gay rather than straight.... Would that choice somehow make them less moral?
Saying "it's not a choice" works pretty well in mainstream american debate, and personally I'm not sure if it is a choice for some people or not. But I would be hard-pressed to think of arguments which prove that choosing to be gay is somehow unethical.
A little more below, then poll.
Suppose that at some point in your life, you actually had the choice as to whether to be gay or straight. What factors would go into your decision? You might be saying right now, "well, it's never a choice." But has that really been proven as a biological fact? I don't think it has, so let me continue. If you were trying to be as ethical as possible and really do the "right thing", what would you consider?
It seems to me that one could actually argue that choosing to be gay is the more ethical choice because it doesn't lead to population problems. It also doesn't lead to male-female gender roles being propegated through generations. If you can choose it, maybe you should??
I can also think of a few pro-straight arguments that have about as much merit as the above "pro-gay" arguments, but there's not much point in mentioning them, because I'm not interested in this kind of debate. It's that I think it's important to realize that, if gayness is a choice, it's not so obvious that it's the wrong one in any way. However we are constantly using the proposed lack-of-choice as an argument to tell people that homosexuality is ok. That makes it seem as though we think it if it were a choice it would be the unethical one, and I don't see why.
So let me pose the question for you to answer in comments and poll. If someone has a choice as to their sexuality, and they choose to be gay, do you think that is somehow wrong, bad, evil, or immoral?
