Not much noticed in the news of the attack on Zarqawi's safe house is the death of a child, and a woman, and several unidentified men also in the house. The child, who has not been named, cannot be assumed to be a combatant or a terrorist. We don't even know how old he or she was.
So many innocents have died in this war. So many innocents continue to die in the Sudan, in Afghanistan, in the ongoing strife in Chechnya, and in so many other places. Too many of those innocents are children.
We must mourn and grieve their loss. Our society used to think the lives of children priceless. Unfortunately, there seems to be little such sentiment when it comes to Iraqi children, Sudanese children, Russian children, etc. Come to think of it, given the outrageous level of violence in this country and the awesomely expensive healthcare system we have, I am not sure many people think that the lives of American children have too much value.
Cry for the dead children. Pray that their deaths, and the deaths of all innocents, will stop so that mankind can finally live in peace with love for each other.
