I was pointed to this by Pandagon, and the source is the New Republic. I came to Kos to see if people were talking about it but I do not see anything. So I thought I'd highlight Senator Biden's absurd statement today.
Here's the source:
The Note
And here's the money quote.
The Senator from Delaware also said that he hopes the event improves President Bush's approval ratings. "We get one president at a time. This election in November is not for President of the United States. . . I hope it does improve his standing and emboldens him to take bolder moves in terms of his policy in Iraq. . . His low ratings and his inability to rally support is a difficult position for the United States internationally."
This quote represents the current top-down democratic structure of the United States at its worst. What's really important, in the logic that Senator Biden is expounding, is that the President do what he wants to do, and it's incumbent on the rest of to support him.
Why on EARTH is a Democratic Senator rushing to the side of a GOP President whose latest approval ratings are mired in the low-to-mid 30s? Is there a single Republican who would perform a similar favor for an unpopular Democratic President?
As Michael Crowley says about this:
Crowley
Biden to left: "Hate me."
Happy to oblige.
Those of us who actually oppose the policies of the current President, and who don't want the United States to be wasting its money and manpower fighting an unnecessary war in Iraq are looking for representation in the US Government. Senator Biden is making it eminently clear that his loyalties lie more to the plutocracy than to the base of his own party. Having seen this pattern with so-called leftist leaders ranging from Joe Lieberman to Tony Blair, I've reached a point where I think it's more important to cut out the people in our own party who do not represent our interests than to worry about trying to beat the Right with their help. Because they betray our interests, again and again.
