It's been a very long time since I've updated. I try to only do it when I feel that I have a salient point to make on something that hasn't already been said thousands of times. This being the case, I'm not entirely certain why I am blogging at this time. What will follow is mostly an angry rant. It's about people who hate America.
We hear all the time about "America haters." The right likes to describe bloggers on sites like these, democrats, protesters, and a number of others as such. Perhaps they should be looking in a mirror more often. After all, did we call for the execution of an editor for a story he published? Sounds pretty un-American to me. What about trying to prevent fair military trials for detainees? Again, that seems fairly contrary to the criminal procedure amendments to the consitution. Slandering veterens? I don't think American society would commend this.
Do these people not understand the ideal that is America? Do they think that the founders didn't want a plurality of ideas, but wanted one group to take over and force their political, social, and religious views on everyone else? Do they believe that good Americans are supposed to blindly follow their governments every word and condemn those who would dissent? It seems difficult to fathom.
There is an alternative point of view. Maybe the Coulters and Malkins and Hannitys actually cannot stand what America truly stands for. These people dont want a free press. They want their own press which no one else has a right to use. They want to force one religion on the rest of us and punish those who do not fit their limited worldview. Frankly, I think they just can't stand that some in this society hold different opinions then they do. It is ironic that one of Sean Hannity's books is entitled "Let Freedom Ring" when in fact he would like nothing more than to squelch freedom for those who disagree with him.
We've all heard by now about the incident of Melanie Morgan calling for the execution of the NY Times editors who were responsible for publishing the story about the bank monitoring program. I hope that most of you we're as disgusted as I was. However, this is still America, and she gets to say things like that. If we don't like them, we just will have to deal. It just makes me sad that she and the rest of her ilk would not want to extend the same courtesy.
Do they not get what America is about, or do they understand it and hate it? I wish I knew the answer.
