More bloodletting in the Mideast, and as most Americans can barely connect the dots to a bunch of familiar sounding violent names and conflicts, no one really wants to think about what's happening right now in Lebanon.
I guess it's nothing new. Promises broken. Civilians killed. Another opportunity lost...and yet more evidence that the Bush doctrine was really just a sham.
Remember February 2005? The Cedar Revolution? Lebanon successfully removing the Syrian imposed government after the atrocious bombing that killed Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri? It was to be a hallmark of American foreign policy - bringing democracy to the rest of the world, overthrowing the shackles of tyranny, and all that jazz. What a farce! Well, it was fun while it lasted.
"Democracy! Peace! Coalitions!" More like, "Fuck you Lebanon, you're on your own!"
And what are most Lebanese thinking? Are they thanking the forces of democracy for the freedom and prosperity that we promised? Are they enjoying their rights that all humans should enjoy?
No, they're getting the shit bombed out of them. Their country is being invaded as Israel pursues a terrorist organization that's holding two of their soldiers.
And perhaps they're thinking to themselves: "We sure wish Syria could protect us."
In the end, sadly enough, probably no one will ask "How did we lose Lebanon?"
