I've loved Tom Tomorrow since I was a kid, reading him in our local alt-weekly in Mobile, AL (The Harbinger - RIP). I just popped over to This Modern World to clear my head, and I read the following entry:
An Open Letter to David Carr at the New York Times
Reading this makes me realize just how off the deep end things have gotten in this country...
I don't know about y'all, but I can clearly remember a time when you could engage opponents in rational discourse in politics. The ability to openly disagree like this is supposed to be one of our most cherished American values.
But the deep, dark secret of the new crop of wingnuts is just what Tom is talking about. This is not some random whackjob sharpening tools and muttering about black helicopters in the mountains somewhere. What have we come to when it's apparently acceptable that best-selling authors joke about sending anthrax to journalists? Why is it okay to threaten the lives of Supreme Court justices when kids get suspended from school for expressing political views that go against the current regime? (I can tell you there were PLENTY of anti-Clinton sentiments tossed around my high school without any sanction whatsoever.)
I find it so hard to wrap my head around how we sank so far so fast as a nation. It's so vitally important to get these people out of office now; our national character depends on it.
