Just in case you had any illusions that the Bush Administration is looking out for average Americans, along comes
this doozy:
The federal government is moving to eliminate the jobs of nearly half of the lawyers at the Internal Revenue Service who audit tax returns of some of the wealthiest Americans, specifically those who are subject to gift and estate taxes when they transfer parts of their fortunes to their children and others.
So now the Feds are telling us that the problem of tax cheats does not come from the rich, but from the middle class and the poor. And remember, this is the same outfit that persistently fights the estate tax as though it were evil, when it actually represents the first and only time the government will be permitted to tax that money in many cases.
If Congressional Dems can't use this issue this fall to prove that the GOP is out of touch, they are more hopeless than I thought. This should prove to be an easy "people vs. the powerful" sell. Let's see if the Dems can pick up the ball here.
