Much fuss has been made over Hezbollah's position that Israel has no "right to exist". This has been trumpeted as ample reason for excising them from Lebanon with a rusty scalpel, no anesthesia. But when you think about it, I have to admit Hezbollah is right...
This is basically a thought experiment to inject some reality into the hi-falutin moral posturing..
What does it mean: this "Right To Exist"? Who has it, and who doesn't? Israel was created from a colonial promise, and sustained via bloodshed, elbow grease, subsidy and patronage. America was created from a similar process that began 300 years ago. So was Russia, so was Great Britian. And so am I, and so are you. We are all a fait accompli, whose right to exist exists because we ourselves exist and have or were granted the means to continue to do so.
There is no such thing as a "right to exist"--such a "right" is a moral afterthought, a rationalization for what has already been acheived via power, and defended by force of arms. Suppose the Republicans get their Rapture--America collapses, the rule of law is subverted, the power grid goes down, and the police cease to function.. what will this supposed "right to exist" which we all share mean? I'll tell you.. it will mean about as much as a peehole in the snow. Your right to exist will depend on your ability to do so, your protection: wits and weapons.
We all exist because our tribal mafias keep us secure. So if anyone believes they have such a "right to exist", they might consider amending it with the footnote: "Security provided by..[insert army here]".
