I just read this off of news service, I backtracked to see if it had been diaried yet, didn't find anything. Arlen Specter has said he will introduce a bill by the end of the week to challenge Bush's power on signing statements. Pres. Bush has included signing statements on over 800 bills. The American Bar Association also today issued a report, that states these signing statements are against The Constitution.
This bill would give the U.S. Congress the right to bring lawsuits against Bush's signing statements.
Do we believe this guy this time. Or is this just another one of his "I'm blowing smoke up your ass".
From what I read, with the signing statements, they tie Congress's hands. They would prefer, passage by the President or a veto. Remember he does know how to veto a bill, as he did this last week concerning Stem Cells. I know this is short, I'll try to update.
Update: ABC News: ABA President Michael Greco said "That non-veto hamstrings Congress because Congress cannot respond to a signing statement."
This from AP: " The ABA estimates Bush has issued signing statements on more than 800 statues, more than all other President combined."
"Of particular interest to Specter are two signing statements, challenging the USA Patriot Act renewal, which he wrote and legislation banning the use of torture of detainees." One can only hope, Specter, will follow through on this bill, especially with the ABA's strong statements from their report. Somehow, someway this administration cannot continue to lead America down this path.
