We've seen a lot of straw men poking their ugly heads up on Daily Kos the past couple of weeks--the two most prominent being 1) the Hezbollah-supporting Israel-hater and 2) the Zionist who considers any criticism of Israel whatsoever to be antisemitic.
My hunch is that there is nobody here who even remotely resembles either of these caricatures: but, in case I'm wrong, if you're a Hezbollah fan, or if you feel that even the slightest criticism of Israel is antisemitic, please check in here and explain your points of view.
My guess is that, despite all the flamewars back and forth about what's going on in Lebanon, Israel and Gaza right now, 99% of Daily Kos participants would agree with the following points:
1) Hezbollah started this: kidnapping the Israel soldiers was a highly irresponsible act, and the fact that a number of Lebanese are held in Israeli prisons and the fact that Israel was in the midst of an "incursion" into the Gaza strip is no justification for such irresponsible behavior.
2) Israel responded with disproportionate force: killing hundreds of civilians and destroying Lebanon's infrastructure was not a justifiable response and has been shown (in light of the continuing rocket attacks on Northern Israel) to be an ineffective way of combatting Hezbollah.
3) Israel has a right to exist--regardless of whether you think its establishment was justified or not, you can't get rid of it now, because you'd not simply be getting rid of a bunch of Zionist settlers: you'd be getting rid of an established nation and culture. At this point, even if you gave every Israeli $500,000 and a free ticket to America, you'd still be committing cultural genocide.
4) The Palestinians have a right to a viable state of their own, based on the pre-1967 borders of Israel (arguably with a few land-swaps here and there to preserve certain established Israeli settlements), and with the Arab parts of East Jerusalem as its capital.
