I hate to use a diary to ask a question here, but perhaps this will turn into a fair thread on the topic. With the Lamont/Lieberman
debate on tap for Thursday and today's not so startling news that Lieberman will run as an
Independent if and when he loses the August 8 Democratic primary I'm left with a few thoughts.
First of all, Joe Lieberman is at his weakest point right this very second. After his pathetic
performance today on CNN it should be clear that Joementum has absolutely no leg to stand on for turning his nose up at the Democratic voters of Connecticut. He has no talking points and no dialogue that can withstand even a 5th graders questions to his integrity in this matter.
I think its been said in many places online, but I'll restate, Lamont won the Primary today. Everything from here on out is gearing for November.
So what does Ned stand to gain by debating Lieberman Thursday night?
Frankly, I don't see any gain to be had.
Lieberman just gave Ned all the name recognition and credibility he's going to need over the next 5 months. And by saying that, I further think Lieberman has branded Lamont as well. From here on out, on issues like health care, Iraq, trade, jobs, Schiavo/morals, you name it, Ned is the opposite of Lieberman. Ned won't even have to open his mouth, but everytime Lieberman does Ned will be granted the opposing view point in the minds of voters.
Everything from here out (unless dynamics change) should/will be a referendum on Joe Lieberman.
I think that Ned and his campaign should take the high road after todays events, and withdraw from Thursday's debate. The campaign should state that there is nothing to be gained from discussing the issues with Lieberman within the guise of an upcoming Primary when the Senator will not honor the outcome of the vote.
I don't think there is any room for backlash against Ned here, and I think it offers the potential to further galvanize Democrats against Lieberman. To me, it looks a win-win in that regard.
