I am Anna Nevenic, a nurse and community activist and Progressive Democrat who is running for Congress in Nevada's 3rd District. Today I will talk briefly about my education plan.
The educational status quo is not enough for Americans. I will work for funding to recruit and retain highly qualified teachers and enable them to give more individual attention to students who need it. Government sponsored mandatory testing will be eliminated and testing authority will be given to teachers. This will free up funds to educate students and help them succeed. I believe that preventing illiteracy among our youth is a priority. The students who are behind in their academic studies should be offered tutorial services in grades 1 and 2. Early intervention is crucial to the continued survival of America as a leading economic, social and intellectual force in the world. Many students do not plan to go to college and therefore should be offered expanded technical training opportunities. We should engage the whole society to join in this national crusade to end this glaring educational deficit among our youth, one that leads to poverty, illiteracy, crime, teen pregnancy and other social problems.
These efforts will enable thousands of children to become prosperous and useful citizens in our great nation. Our children are our most important asset, however our elected leaders have failed miserably in their educational public policy making. Every industrialized country is using all their resources available to educate and take care of the young. The opposite is happening in the United States. This has to change immediately; we are losing millions of children to poverty and other unproductive activities.
Next time, I will continue to discuss education as related to college and higher education.
I look forward to reading your comments and suggestions.
