The Brick Patriots is a satirical science fiction web comic I created, using "brick" figures and models, featuring a brother and sister team who travel back in time to try and stop the Republicans from destroying America with horrendous public policies and giant killer robots.
Why did I take the time to do this? I was actually inspired by an issue of Comic Buyers Guide that boasted an
uncritical feature story on Mike Mackey's
Liberality for All with a laudatory sidebar starring G. Gordon Liddy.
I certainly support Mackey's right to say what he wants, even though I find it unappealing. And if CBG wants to give a platform to Liddy -- who burgled the offices of the Democratic National Committee, setting in chain the resignation of President Nixon; who in 1994 advised his listeners to shoot agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; who recently proclaimed environmentalists as "fanatics like al-Quaida"; who says that if U.S. policy during the Vietnam War was up to him, he would have "drowned half the country and starved the other half" -- then that's CBG's right.
However, I wrote into CBG respectfully to tell them I expected more from them and to let them know I was perplexed that CBG applies more critical thinking and analysis to Wonder Woman than it does to a politically charged work that knowingly celebrates the likes of Liddy and denigrates liberals as coddling terrorists. In my eyes, to not even acknowledge Liddy's sordid past and present, and to blindly accept the ideas these conservative hacks present (including that comic books, as an industry, "are liberal" whatever that means), is simply unacceptable.
I did receive a response from the CBG editor, which was great, and while I could see her point of view (essentially the magazine typically avoids evaluating the views espoused in feature stories), I couldn't just let it go. From that frustration, The Brick Patriots was born.
Hope you enjoy it!
