July 2nd and 3rd
By Sergio Sarmiento

Now arrives the moment of the final decision, after a rough campaign of six months, 13 thousand million of pesos and a lot of personal attacks. Is it the best possible system? Perhaps no. But it's not the worst. In fact, it's just enough to turn around and see the United States, particularly Florida, torealize that is possible to have an electoral system much more deficient in a country much richer than ours.
The three principal candidates have arrived to july 2nd as close contenders. This has allowed them to come to end their campaigns affirming that they are close to a victory. Each one of them has their own polls that favors them. But the day of the elections the only valid poll is going to be the votes of the citizens.
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has insisted that a big fraud is being cooked against him. If it's true that during months he seemed very proud of the polls that would put him in first place, as fast as they showed his fall, he was rejecting them to assure that all of them were manipulated. Some polls showed him again in the first position, while others showed him in second. But Lopez Obrador now refuses to accept any published poll and says that he has the only
correct one, wich gives him 10 points above the rest; the problem is that he doesn't want to reveal the name of who made it or the information of it's methodology.
Felipe Calderon had for a few weeks the first place in all the polls, but he has lost it. The subject of Hildebrando, the company of his brother in law, has been particularly damaging for his cause. Little matters that to this day nobody has been able to prove an illegal or irregular activities by Calderon or his brother in law.
Roberto Madrazo has been left out of the list of possible winers by almost all media (always! it's an exception). This is due greatly because of having the third place in almost all the polls, except the one of Maria de las Heras, which puts him in second place with Calderon. But sometimes its forgotten that PRI is the only party with a real national presence and with a politic machine made to accomplish that their supporters go out to vote. If july 2nd is important, July 3rd can be crucial. It is not foreseen any problems in case Lopes Obrador wins, even if it's narrow margin, because PAN and PRI have shown in various ocassions that they would be willing to accept a defeat.
The big question is if PRD would acknowledge a defeat, especially if it's by a narrow margin. The party has questioned the list of registered voters, IFE and the Electoral Court; not so much in, of course, the case an AMLO victory was ilegitimate, but just enough that in case he looses, he can say he is a victim of fraud on the elections.
