I am a liberal Democrat running for Congress in District 3 Nevada. I am a nurse, author and peace activist. "The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it." Albert Einstein
Our history has been the story of change. The struggle to live up to our founding ideals - justice and equality - has been an ongoing one. When we have seen injustice and inequality in our institutions and our laws, the American people have risen time and again to challenge them. When the majority of Americans learned the truth about the injustice of slavery, our citizens decided that no moral future existed for a republic that allowed the ownership of fellow human beings. And once slavery had been abolished, the country then went on to guaranee the rights of women.
The people again rose to the challenge with the blossoming of the modern labor movement. They fought to put government on the side of the people and passed laws which allowed the government to delvier a series of landmark reforms, including child labor laws, a 40 hour work week, worker safety laws, and minimum wage. Those measures brought new meaning to the concept of equality - an equality of opportunity.
And now we are entering a new era. After a few decades of relative peace and prosperity, we are beginning to see that our system is very much out of balance, and the interests of many people are not being served. It should not be this way. As Thomas Jefferson said, "Public offices were not made for private convenience." When our country goes in the wrong direction, it is our duty to set it right. The Republican party has embraced the Religious Right leaders into their ranks. A full scale campaign is underway to take away women's right to choose at the highest level of our government. Many members of Congress are at the behest of the religious right, pushing a bill called the Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act. This Act, if passed, would allow churches and other religious institutions to endorse political candidates while retaining their tax exempt status.
